Any luck adding the Delorme PN-20 to the list of GPS units that work with ExpertGPS? How about the new Garmin Colorado?

I purchased the Delorme under the assumption that it was compatible with my other GIS software, however its pretty much a useless yellow brick without the expensive Delorme GIS suite, so I will probably get rid of it and purchase the Garmin Colorado and it would be great if I could use that with ExpertGPS.

Thanks

Garmin Colorado support will be released for ExpertGPS, GeoBuddy, and EasyGPS in less than 24 hours. I'm doing the final testing now. Look for version 2.8 of each product on Wednesday.

I have a Delorme PN-20, but have put it aside for the time being. It would be a lot of work to support this in ExpertGPS. Delorme might want to release an access DLL if they want 3rd parties to write for this GPS - it is easily the most difficult GPS interface I've encountered. (Still, they are to be commended for releasing documentation for it)

Thanks for the info, it looks like I need to ditch the Delorme and add the Colorado to my want list

Dan,

Gee, I hope you get back to looking at the Delorme Earthmate and the USB interface... I use a serial emulator to take the USB NMEA stream to a virtual com port that I point ExpertGPS to..... It would sure be nice if ExpertGPS could simply read a stream from a USB port directly.

Thanks for your continued work on ExpertGPS.

I, too, hope you can get the DeLorme PN-20 incorporated into supported GPS receivers in ExpertGPS. I really don't like working with DeLorme's software if I don't have to...yours is so much more straightforward. With release of the much improved PN-40 imminent, I hope you can support both of these remarkable units. Is there anyway we could help contact DeLorme to see that you can get the DLL you need?

Hi,

Can anyone report any other (Comsumer Level) GPS programs that support the PN-20 other than Delorme Topo 6,7?

Delorme people read their forums and often respond usefully.

Posts there probably hastened the releasing documentation for it.

I am unable to keep up with the volume of posts so I do not know if this has been discussed there.

Is the documentation for the DeLorme PN-20 USB protocol available online somewhere? I've been unable to locate it through the usual google searches and it's not obviously linked from their main web site.

Hi,

Yes, I know.

But I have had to stop using my PN-20 for quite a while. And I forget how I did it and could not find the files for clues. Perhaps they are on an old Laptop I have not used for a while. For sure on a CD with my photos and Track logs for my 2007 Camping trips.

-----------------------------------------------------

I posted a bitter comment about not being able to use "GPX", search for my posts.

I do not have the details handy and it was back in 2007 that I transferred waypoints from PN-20 to Topo 7 and then to ExpertGPS.

I may have used GPSBable and for sure I was not real happy with the results. Topo 6 required a different method I remember.

"CSV" or other text type files for sure were involved.

Waypoint NAMES!!! Lost a major complaint. Also Waypoint Symbols.

I also transferred waypoints from ExpertGPS to Topo 7 and then to my PN-20.

If you have not figured out how to do this on your own, try posting another message and hopefully I will see it and have the time to look at the files.

It's been almost 2 years since the original post, and 9 months since the last post. I noticed with my new copy of GPSExpert Pro that Delorme receivers are still not supported (no receivers in the list when you select "Delorme"). Are there any plans to support the PN- line in the future?

There are no plans to support them in the immediate future. Delorme's USB protocol is very low-level. I don't understand why they don't release a DLL or some other way to transfer data that doesn't involve writing a device level USB driver.

For now, you're stuck using Delorme's software to transfer data, and GPX files to move data between Delorme's software and ExpertGPS.
