Why can't I send someone a private message?

I used to be able to send messages directly to somebody, now I get an error.

"You are not allowed to use the messenger feature on this board"

What's up?

Thanks to a bug in the IP Board forum software, last year some spammer sent porn links to everyone on the forum using private messages. IP Board fixed it, but I'm not taking that risk again. If you need to get in touch with someone and don't have their email, contact me, and I'll put the two of you in contact.
