Measuring Distance Traveled

2 posts in this topic

I have recently purchased a book of hiking trails for my state, and it has a feature that I would like to use. The author measured distances to certain landmarks along the trail and gives that information in his description of each trail. He will say something like,"At 1.2 miles from the trailhead, you will come to a junction with Big Rock Trail." If it's possible to measure these distances and not just a straight-line bearing with my Lowrance iFinder (about 10 years old), I need to learn how to do that. If I can't do it with the GPS I have, could someone recommend a fairly inexpensive GPS that will do that?

Thanks in advance.

Almost all GPS receivers have an odometer function. Simply note the mileage at the trailhead (or reset it to zero), and walk until the odometer has incremented by 1.2 miles.
